"WHY?" the woman's demand reverberated through the room. She stood abruptly from her chair, then faltered and leaned on the armrest, clutching at her abdomen, engorged with a pregnancy of 6 months.
When neither of her parents-in-laws cared to respond, she raised the question again. "Why are you sending me away?"
Lovino couldn't bear to look at her. Neither could the King and Queen, her in-laws, though their aversion was out of embarrassment than pain, he suspected. Sobbing in the gaspy way that people who did not cry often do, Mikasa Ackerman stumbled through the school courtyard, blundering into the cold winter rains in only a sweater. She paid no attention to the ice-cold rivulets as they ran down her face, only heeding the alternating tsunamis of humiliation and anger. As if it were not horrid enough to have some boy attempt to make advances on her inappropriately, she had to get detention and write an apology to him when she slapped him and kneed him in the groin, while he himself got off scot-free. The unfairness of it all wanted to make her burn something.

As the nutmeg-skinned girl shoved the last of her bread into her mouth, then washed it down with water, she felt a small bump in the interior of her lungs. Oh, no, she thought, I don't have time for this!. Pressing her lips together and holding her breath, she attempted to pressure that disturbance into nonexistence. A few deep breaths and swallows of water later, it seemed to have disappeared. Wiping her mouth, she stood and prepared to leave the mess hall.
